Views and notes from SportsTalkCLEVELAND’s football correspondent, GLENN MOORE, on the Cleveland Gladiators 62-56 overtime loss to the Spokane Shock Saturday night in Cleveland.

Playoffs? Playoffs? – The Gladiators playoff hopes took a hit with their eighth loss of the season, keeping them in the basement of the Midwest Division. Dropping to 6-8 and only two games remaining, Cleveland needs to win their final two games and also get a lot of help from other teams if they want to taste the postseason. The Shock improved to 11-2 and have won nine in a row. They wrapped up the West Division crown with tonight’s win.

Pick 6 – While the Gladiators came back and forced the game into overtime, they couldn’t covert on their first possession in the extra period. Instead, quarterback John Dutton was picked off by Victor Williams at the Spokane seven yard line. Williams then zigzagged to the end zone and gave the Shock the win.

Injury Bug Bites – During tonight’s loss, the Gladiators lost two of their starting wide receivers to injury. Ben Nelson, who was having an outstanding year, and Chris Johnson both exited midway through the game.

“Both injuries could be pretty bad. We’ll have to wait and see what the test shows,” head coach Steven Thonn said after the game.

Nelson left the game with six catches for 72 yards, including two touchdowns. Johnson left with 18 yards on two catches.

Leaders Of The Half – Spokane came into tonight’s game 8-0 when leading at the half. They continued that trend tonight. They held Cleveland to only seven points in the first quarter and 21 for the half. The Gladiators continued their trend of not being able to comeback from a halftime deficit, as they dropped to 1-4 when down at the midway point.

Big Guys Need Love Too – Scoring your first touchdown in any league is special. Scoring your first touchdown as a 6-8, 325 man is even more special. Adam Tadisch took Dutton’s pass at the Shock’s 15-yard line and literally carried five players on the way to the endzone for the Gladiators 2nd quarter touchdown.

Dutton finished the game 27-45 for 294 yards, including five touchdown passes and one interception, which turned out to be the game winner for the Shock.

LeBron James Sighting At The Q – Well, not really. But several Spokane players celebrated touchdowns and key plays by imitating the LeBron James chalk toss. Huey Whittaker was the started the charade, as he was booed from the Cleveland crowd after his team’s first touchdown.

“I just figured I’d pay tribute to a great player,” Whittaker said.

As a side note, no anti-LeBron James videos or pictures were displayed on the Q-Tube during the game.

One To The Next One – The Gladiators will play the Oklahoma City Yard Dogz next Saturday at home. The Yard Dogz entered this week’s play with a 5-7 record. Cleveland and Oklahoma City have not played each other this year.

Views and notes from SportsTalkCLEVELAND’s football correspondent, GLENN MOORE, on the Cleveland Gladiators 76-35 win over the Iowa Barnstormers Saturday night in Cleveland.

GET THE BROOMS – With this win over Iowa, Cleveland swept the season series and now holds the tie-breaker advantage for playoff qualification should the teams finish with identical records. The Gladiators improved to 5-6 as Iowa fell to 4-6. Cleveland also advanced to third place in the Midwest Division.

PICK 6 – Quarterback JOHN VENAof the Barnstormers came into the game leading the league in interceptions with 16. And while the Gladiators only could muster one from Vena, it did account for six points. LEVY BROWN, who returned from injured reserve, took the interception back for a Gladiators touchdown in the third quarter and put Cleveland up by 28.

TURNOVERS EQUAL TOUCHDOWNS- The Gladiators were able to maintain a comfortable lead due to converting touchdowns on Barnstormers turnovers. Iowa couldn’t handle the opening kickoff, which was recovered by Cleveland and ultimately led to the Gladiators first touchdown of the game. Cleveland also was able to recover three fumbles and two interceptions, which led to 28 points. The Gladiators didn’t give away the ball once the whole game.

WELCOME BACK – Brown earned player of the game honors with his outstanding defensive and special teams play. He finished the game with six tackles and one pass break up. But his intensity on special teams was contagious as Cleveland did not allow a big play on the Barnstormers kickoff returns.

J.D.TO B.N. – Gladiators quarterback JOHN DUTTON was able to hook up with his favorite target BEN NELSONfive times for touchdowns. Nelson finished the game with seven catches for 157 yards. Dutton continued to add to his storied AFL career, going 24-40 for 284 yards and seven touchdowns.

HOME SWEET HOME – The Gladiators will be on the road for the next two games against Tulsa and Orlando, but finishing the regular season with three home games should help their chances in making the playoffs. They are 3-2 at home but 2-4 on the road.

D.J. Dorko (STC) – Gladiators Squander Big Lead; Lose To Arizona

After a one-year layoff Arena Football returned to Cleveland as the Cleveland Gladiators started off the season with a tough loss versus the Arizona Rattlers 61-56 in a game that was a tale of two halves.

“We played for thirty minutes”,  Gladiators quarterback John Dutton said. “It’s tough when you think you have the game wrapped up, but it was only halftime.”

The Gladiators got on the board early as Dutton connected with Ben Nelson to give the Gladiators a 7-0 lead, to finish off a drive that lasted 3:15.

Unfortunately after a goal-line stand by the defense the offense was able to capitalize as Dutton was intercepted by Arizona linebacker Kelvin Morris. Two plays later leading to Rattler’s quarterback Nick Davila hitting Tradon Harvey to tie the game at seven.

Dutton, who finished the game with 287 yards and seven touchdowns, was able to shake off the early pick by immediately redeeming himself on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Brent Holmes to give the Gladiators a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

The Gladiators owned the second quarter as Dutton threw a pair of touchdown passes to Nelson and another to Holmes giving the Gladiators a 35-14 lead going into halftime. Most impressive was the defense who not only was able to hold Arizona to 14 first half points, but also forced six first half Rattler turnovers including three stops on fourth down.

“The defense played great, we had stops,” Gladiators head coach Steve Thonn said. “Our defense played well enough for us to win the game tonight.”

The second half would prove to be a different story however as Harvey would score three third quarter touchdowns including a 58 yard kickoff return to start the half and the Gladiators lead was suddenly gone.

“Special teams really hurt us tonight,” Thonn said. “We have to look at our scheme first, than we have to look at the players.”

The Gladiators seemed to have the game in hand as an attempted onside kick by the Rattlers turned into a touchdown by Carlos Campbell. The Rattlers were able to preserve late, although the Gladiators despite squandering a lead would not go down without a fight.

Facing a fourth and five on their own five-yard line midway through the fourth quarter Dutton hit his favorite target Nelson (eight catches 154 yards four touchdowns) once again for a 35-yard completion, to give the Gladiators new life. Dutton would hit Chris Johnson for a touchdown on the very next play.

However a fumble recovery deep in Gladiators territory by Rattlers defensive back Sergio Gilliam proved to be the difference as Arizona capitalized with Davila completing a touchdown pass to Rod Windsor to give the Rattlers their first lead of the game.

The Gladiators would get one final shot but Dutton threw his fourth interception of the game, and the Rattlers would run out the clock.

“It was a stupid pick, it was not a veteran move,” Dutton said. “This is a quarterback league and when your quarterback doesn’t play good we’re not going to win, and I didn’t play good.”

The Gladiators will try to get their first win of the season next week as they travel to Chicago to play the Rush.
