Cleveland Browns

Since the beginning of 2010, the city of Cleveland has been teased and punished by someone who – based on the exposure he’s received – acted like he won a championship.

He’s gone now and I refuse to look backwards so to ‘the Lord of No Rings’ I say – enjoy South Beach.

Right now Cleveland needs football just like a baby needs milk. I can already feel the excitement in the air knowing that training camp is just around the corner. The Cleveland Browns will give us that relief we have been desperately needing.

There’s a new sheriff in town named Mike Holmgren and for the first time since 1999, there is legitimate hope that the Browns can turn the corner and become a relevant and proud franchise once again.

We need the jaw breaking hits on the Pittsburgh Steelers, the quarterback sacks on the Baltimore Ravens, and the interceptions thrown by the Cincinnati Bengals.

We need the 90 plus yard kickoff returns from Josh Cribbs as Cleveland Browns Stadium erupts.

The brown and orange is Cleveland and Clevelanders bleed brown and orange.

Most of all, Cleveland needs a successful season and anything under eight wins with what the fans just went through would be a disaster.

Football is the only sport that at around 7 am on an early fall Sunday; you can’t wait for your team to take the field at 1pm.

You’ve already marinated your ribs, burgers, chicken, etc. in your secret spices the night before. You’re ready to load up your vehicle and head down to the Muni Lot or your favorite tailgate spot and get the pre-party started.

You talk to people whom you have never met in your entire life, but when its comes to Browns football a tailgate is as good (or better) than a family reunion.

Football is passed down through generations. If your mom or dad were Browns fans, chances are you are too.

It’s a done deal because your kids will be fans also.

I can’t wait until the crisp, chilly fall days and the freezing winter games hoping that my team is in contention for something other than just hope.

Cleveland we need Browns football and we need it now more than ever – “ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL”!

Cleveland, Ohio - The Fans Have Nothing To Be Ashamed Of

For a little over thirty years now, my sports life in regards to Cleveland sports franchises, you can say has somewhat been sweetened but not stirred.

I’ve seen the Cleveland Indians play in the World Series a few times and on a few occasions were considered by most to be the best team in all of baseball. The Indians have had several legitimate all-stars and not just the one player from major league baseball rule that has to go on the all star roster. Did we forget about such names as Roberto and Sandy Alomar, Albert Belle, Kenny Lofton and Omar Vizquel?

Did we forget that at one time the Tribe had all stars from the beginning to the end of the line-up?

I didn’t.

It hasn’t taken too long for the Indians to get right back on track after hitting some slumps. Players like C.C. Sabathia, Cliff Lee, Travis Hafner, and Fausto Carmona, all have been around within the last five years.

The Cleveland Browns have brought me some happy times in my life. I can remember as kid in the late 80’s not being able to wait to watch “Inside the NFL” because I knew my Browns would get a lot of coverage.

We cheered for players like Felix Wright, Hanford Dixon, Kevin Mack, Ozzie Newsome, Clay Matthews. And I know you all remember both Mike and Greg Pruitt.

Of course we’ll always cherish Bernie Kosar.

Somehow Cleveland fans have let the media and prima-donna players (LeBron James) dictate what kind of city you are. In the past 25 years you have been to three AFC championship games, two World Series appearances, and one NBA Finals. Even though the Cavs were swept, this accomplishment is something that most cities would love to say their teams have done.

Cleveland, its time we take our city back!

A blue collar city that will bring home a championship and bring respect to a place where the fans are the most passionate and vocal fans of any major sports city.

Let’s help our franchises build around the franchise and not a specific player.

But to do this, you first will need to determine what type of fan you are.

Are you a fan of a player?

Or are you a fan of your team?

Why do professional athletes think they are bigger than the law?

We’ve seen over and over again how athletes have put themselves into terrible situations from strip clubs to local bars to carrying loaded weapons through an airport.

In 2007 then Tennessee Titan Adam “Pacman’ Jones carrying over $81,000 in a bag ‘made it rain’ (threw money in air) in a Las Vegas night club, that sparked a riot and a triple shooting.

Before that incident, Jones was considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. Soon after that incident Jones was suspended by in NFL, released from the Titans, picked up by the Dallas Cowboys, out of football for a year, and just now getting a fourth (and likely last) opportunity in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals.

I wonder if his career could’ve been different had he never gone to that strip club?

Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers has also been in a series of awkward situations himself, that all started in a 2006 motor cycle accident in which the quarterback had not been wearing a helmet.

In 2009 a young woman filed a civil suit against Roethlisberger, alleging he raped her in 2008.

In early March of this year he had a sexual assault complaint filed by a 20-year-old Georgia woman.

Roethlisberger through all of this has maintained his innocence.

Now Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young has put himself up for critics once again.

After some serious mental health issues Young seemed to be getting his career back on track, regaining his starting position last year and was certainly on pace to being one of the best at his position in 2010.

Titans QB Vince Young Continues The Alarming Trend Of Poor Decision Making By Pro Athletes

Then over the weekend Young got himself in trouble and again it all started at a strip club. Young received a misdemeanor citation after getting in a fight in a Dallas strip club over the victim disrespecting the Texas star alma mater. With the heavy trigger finger of Commissioner Roger Goodell expect Young to miss some games.

These are only three examples of athletes making disastrous decisions.

Professional athletes should know that regardless if they embrace it or not – they are role models.
Children across the country and around the world wear their jerseys and emulate their actions on the field.

Let’s hope that trend doesn’t continue to off the field as well.
