Don't expect Browns rookie QB Colt McCoy to take many snaps this year. But that's fine with him.
Views and notes from SportsTalkCLEVELAND’s Cleveland Browns beat writer, GLENN MOORE. You can read “Pigskin Scribbles” throughout training camp and the regular season.
Rookie Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy walked off the field after the Browns first training camp practice Saturday morning with wide eyes and a big smile. The 3,673 fans screaming his name probably had to something to do with it.
The product of University of Texas has welcomed the fact that he might not see the field this year. But will enjoy taking in practice, film, and the advice from veteran starting-quarterback Jake Delhomme. He knows his role will be holding the clipboard and learning.
“I come out to practice and work as hard as I can. Just trying to learn and do my best. Really studying hard in the film room and learning in the meetings,” said McCoy after practice.
Practicing in front of thousands of people is something new to him as well, as fans cheered whenever he completed a pass. The whole mood at practice puts a smile on McCoy’s face.
“I thought it was great. Great atmosphere. In college, we only had one open practice. First day we come out here, there are fans screaming and yelling, it gets your juices flowing.”
And McCoy will do just about anything to help the team, even carrying a veteran’s pads and helmet.
“If I need to play scout team, I’ll play scout team. I come out with the mentality that the reps I get, I’ll produce. My goal is to get better everytime I step on the field.”
You can believe McCoy will keep his eyes and ears open throughout training camp and the regular season. Learning from Delhomme should prepare McCoy enough so when he does get his shot on the field, he won’t be surprised with what transpires.
You have to like the mentality of the rookie quarterback and hope he can carry that same attitude on the field when his number is called. But don’t expect that for a couple years.
