Romero throws 4 scoreless in Jays win (AP)
Ricky Romero battled wind and control problems to pitch four shutout innings as the Toronto Blue Jays topped the Atlanta Braves, 3-0. Romero, who is making a bid for an Opening Day assignment, walked four, but allowed only two hits before turning the ball over to Dana Eveland, who pitched three shutout innings with four strikeouts.

Blue Jays Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
<p>The Blue Jays still haven't given up hope that Dustin McGowan, who missed all of 2009 because of shoulder and knee surgery, will be ready by the start of the season.</p> <p>"It's too early to tell, but there is a scenario that he could (be with the team opening day)," general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "If he continues to progress well, potentially he could work his way to being a starter for us, but we have to see how he does, how deep he gets into (spring training) games.</p> <p>"But the opening-day date is not something that we've targeted specifically. It's more when his arm is ready to go. We're not in a rush."</p> <p>It's doubtful, though not impossible, that McGowan would be ready by the date of the opener, April 5.

McDonald plays role of sage for young Blue Jays (AP)
Becoming a coach isn't on John McDonald's radar just yet, but while he's playing he enjoys being a mentor to his fellow Toronto Blue Jays infielders. "I would hope the younger players would use a player like me as a source of knowledge," said the 35-year-old McDonald, primarily a shortstop who has spent parts of 11 major league seasons between Cleveland and Toronto, plus a...

Sonnanstine sharp as Rays beat Blue Jays 4-1 (AP)
A relaxed Andy Sonnanstine gave the Tampa Bay Rays a glimpse of the pitcher that helped them get to the World Series. The right-hander, who lost his spot in the starting rotation last season after helping the Rays win the AL pennant in 2008, pitched four scoreless innings in Thursday's 4-1 split-squad victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Drabek pitches well for Blue Jays in loss to Phils (AP)
Kyle Drabek, the pitcher the Toronto Blue Jays coveted and finally got in the trade that sent ace Roy Halladay to Philadelphia, tried to treat Wednesday's start against the Phillies like any other game. It was good advice from his father, 1990 National League Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek. The result: two scoreless innings, one walk and one hit allowed in the Phillies' 4-2 victory.

Toronto's McGowan pitches in simulated game (AP)
Blue Jays right-hander Dustin McGowan is feeling good this spring as he tries to make it back from shoulder surgery. McGowan threw 30 pitches during a simulated game at Toronto's minor league complex while the rest of the team had the day off. "Absolutely. I think that's the biggest one, the next two days, to see how I feel," McGowan said after throwing the equivalent of two...

Arencibia homers for Jays in 4-1 win over Astros (AP)

Toronto Blue Jays Jesus Merchan safely steals third base as Houston Astros third baseman Chris Johnson(notes) bobbles the throw during a spring training baseball game, Monday, March 8, 2010, in Kissimmee, Fla.

Toronto manager Cito Gaston thinks Ricky Romero is a much improved pitcher now that he has some experience. The 25-year-old left-hander pitched three shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out two in the Blue Jays' 4-1 win over the Houston Astros on Monday. Rivera went 13-9 in 29 starts as a rookie last season.
