It cannot be reasonably said that the Pirates have a glut in right field, if only because that would imply they are overwhelmed by the possibilities there. They are not.
But they are beginning to amass a group of players with somewhat similar potential for the position, and they added another Wednesday by recalling John Bowker from Class AAA Indianapolis. He joins Ryan Doumit, Lastings Milledge and maybe Brandon Moss later in the month—and all of them will be vying for the only starting vacancy in the outfield.
Bowker, 27, fits the classic "4-A" profile, meaning he fares well in the minors but struggles in the majors. He has a .302 career average in the minors, with 89 home runs over seven seasons, but a .238 career average in the majors, with 15 home runs while... |
